Definition of Blog and Wiki
A BLOG (a contraction of the term "Web log") is defined by Wikipedia as "a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order...Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, Web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important part of many blogs."
Our class blog will allow me to provide you with information on a regular basis. It will allow you to comment on my posts so that I can clarify any questions that you may have. It will also allow me to post videos and/or screencastings of different websites to show you visually how to use them instead of just describing them in words. I can also create a slide show of picture I have taken (or you have taken) of different events for all to see. These are just a few of the many things that can be accomplished through the use of this blog.
A Wiki is defined by Wikipedia as "a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language. Wikis are often used to createcollaborative websites and to power community websites. The collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best-known wikis." "Wiki" is a Hawaiian word for "fast".
Our class Wiki is a good explanation of what I hope to accomplish with both class sites. It also has an updated calendar for you to see the nightly homework and other important events. The chat room can be used by anyone, anytime. A weekly meeting time could be created if parents wanted it to discuss class events or a personal chat with me could be set up to discuss your child's educational concerns.
